The day before you go fishing, fatten up your live bait so that it looks better to the fish and does not take as much time to get on the hook. To fatten worms, line a flat container with newspapers and put the worms in it. Put it in the fridge overnight. The cooler temperature and added humidity helps to plump them up.
There isn’t a single bait that works for every occasion. Instead, you must understand when it is appropriate to use jigs, grubs and worms. The eponymous motions of a jig, for instance, are most effective in somewhat cloudy water where fish are most likely to take note of its movement. Also, plastic worms are excellent for clearer water, because fish can spot them without a great deal of motion.
If you use worms or night crawlers for bait, be sure to thread them securely on your hook. Fish respond to worm bait better when the fisher has done a good job threading it to the hook. You should also use as small of a hook as you can.
Take care to properly bait your fish hook so that you don’t lose bait when you cast off. If the bait you are using is live, this is especially important. Threading a worm lengthwise on your hook ensures that it will stay put. You will prevent the worm from slipping from the hook.
If you aren’t sure what lure to throw out, consider casting out a plastic worm. Worms work well in virtually all water and weather conditions. They do not cost a lot of money, you can find them in the fishing section of most stores, and they attract a wide variety of fish. There is not a need to buy live bait.
If you are using salted worms, you may need to revive their flavor after every few casts. This is especially important if you are fishing in water that is fast-moving or murky. It is also important after you catch a fish. Just rub the worm briskly in your palm to draw the salt back out to the worm’s surface.
When you are trying to catch perch, night crawlers or worms can be an excellent bait. Perch are attracted to both of these types of baits because they are found in a similar type of environment as the perch live in. You can use either fresh or artificial bait to catch these fish.
Earthworms and night crawlers make a great choice for many folks that like to fish. Both of these types of worms wiggle through the water creating movement that tempts fish into biting the hook. Night crawlers are larger than normal earthworms; therefore, which to use will depend on what type of fish is being sought.
